The
Academy Dance Team from the Fenton School of Dance performed
recently at the Access Broadway competition in Troy. The academy
dancers, under the direction of Susan Carter, earned one high silver
medal, six gold medals,
and a
platinum medal for a dance number called "Break the Floor." The
"Break the Floor" dance routine also won third place overall at the
event. The Fenton School of Dance was competing against studios
at this competition where the dancers average 20-plus hours a week
in dance classes. The "Break the Floor" number has its own
special story and to end it with a platinum trophy was a great
accomplishment for Carter and her dance team. It is a production
line tap number with 30 dancers, ranging in age from 10-18. In
November of 2002, Susan arranged to have Jay Fagan, a
performer/choreographer who performs in Las Vegas, among other
places, come to the Fenton Dance Studio and work with the academy
dancers to choreograph this routine. The platinum trophy awarded to
the team was given to Karen Frear, one of the academy moms, for all
her time, dedication, and hard work in creating the costumes worn
for this performance. Frear measured, cut, hemmed, and placed a
shiny red insert into the black flare pants worn by all 30 students
performing this tap routine. Frear completed all the sewing and
hemming despite a severe ice storm that hit the Fenton area the
night before the competition, knocking out power to Fenton and
several surrounding communities, including her home. She went to an
alternate location to complete all the sewing and then drove to Troy
and distributed the pants to each student several hours before they
went on stage. The black, shimmering jackets worn with this outfit
were also handmade by Frear earlier in the year. The "Break the
Floor" number at the Fenton School of Dance year end recital is
being performed at Fenton High School the week of June 9.
