Academy Program

Watercolor Stain

The Academy & Pre-Academy at Fenton School of Dance & Academy is our nationally awarded competitive group that wows crowds every year at regional and national competitions. This program is for those dancers who are looking to take their training to the next level, and who wish to partake in annual adjudicated performance opportunities within Michigan and across the country.

My daughter has been with Fenton School of Dance & Academy for 4 years. The level of instruction is exceptional. The choreography is creative. I love the high emphasis on technique and that they offer Cecchetti instruction.

Pre-Academy

Is your kiddo convinced he/she is ready to be a professional dancer right now? This might be the level of seriousness and commitment your tot is looking for! A more disciplined program involving twice-weekly rehearsals that provide a solid foundation of ballet, tap, and jazz classes with our finest instructors. This is the first big step for our little ones (typically recommended by our teachers after being seen in primary classes) into the academy. Dancers are expected to be dressed properly and focused in class, as they will be in training for a successful competitive dance experience. Pre-academy students compete at one competition each season and are invited to attend the academy annual regional convention with the older, more experienced dancers.

Academy (7+)

Our most rigorous dance program involving elevated training in ballet, tap, and jazz (electives include hip-hop, musical theater, and contemporary). Dancers are required to take twice-weekly classes including our stretch/jumps/turns (non-performance class) to continue perfecting technique. This accumulates to approximately 5 hours of dance per week. Students are also encouraged to take elective classes (hip hop, contemporary, and technique classes) to keep them well rounded.

Dancers and parents must sign a contract and commit to a full season of rehearsals and performances (including the purchase of costumes, make-up, and additional necessary items) dancers hoping to become a part of the Fenton Dance Academy must attend a formal, closed audition following summer classes to determine their level placement (see below).

Academy Involves:

  • 5 technique classes/season

    • Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Cecchetti, and Conditioning

  • At least 2 choreography classes/season

  • We believe ballet is the foundation that a dancer requires to be successful in all other genres of dance. It is the core of a solid dance education. Our technique/variations class combines both Cecchetti and Russian methods of ballet. Dancers will work to build strength in their core, to better understand their bodies, and to master technique of the movement while still being allowed the freedom to express. We strive for a balance of discipline and fun. Students should expect to learn and memorize ballet terminology, participate in barre and center floor exercises, and to fall in love with the lovely classical style that is ballet.

Jazz Technique
A technique-based class involving vigorous warm-up, deep stretching, and the education of various kinds of jumps, turns, and kicks. Class begins center floor and ends by demonstrating techniques learned in the duration of the class.

Tap Technique
This class focuses on the fine motor skills of tapping, and tapping quickly. Center floor exercises such as ankle rolls, time-step battles, and Simon Says step-learning are incorporated with traveling steps that are observed by the teacher as the student practices them across the floor. Perfect your coordination with this brain-busting class.

Cecchetti Ballet
Named after Italian ballet master Encrico Cecchetti, Cecchetti classes help strengthen, sharpen, and push technique. Dancers will participate in seasonal examinations (Fenton School of Dance hires in a Cecchetti-Certified examiner) that award certification up through grade 5. Beginners (regardless of age) start with Grade 1, and work to pass the Grade 1 examination and obtain Grade 1 certification. They can then move on to Grade 2, and move all the way up to Grade 5.

Conditioning (8+)

Crunches and leg lifts and jumping jacks, oh my! Strengthen and build muscle this high-energy, endurance-boosting, dance-centered toning class. Sweat guaranteed!

2 Choreography Classes (dancer's choice):

Tap
Unlike ballet (though we still use that core strength and solid arm placement that comes from ballet), tap focuses more intensely on timing, rhythm, and strength of sound. Students will learn vibrant, exciting choreography that will be rehearsed for competition and other yearly scheduled performance opportunities.

Jazz
Jazz choreography will incorporate the signature turns, kicks, and jumps of this genre, and students are guaranteed to have a blast! Students have an opportunity to let loose and discover their personal style while learning competition and performance choreography that is sure to wow audiences.

Hip-Hop
You thought jazz was high energy? Fasten your seatbelts for this explosive genre! Hip hoppers will learn to locate and move to the beat of pop/hip-hop/clean rap music, and dive head-first into engaging and dynamic choreography that will be performed at competition as well as yearly scheduled performance opportunities.

Contemporary
Arguably the most popular genre trending today, contemporary has evolved into its own stunning world of possibilities. Students will explore thoughtful, creative, powerful choreography that will dazzle and move competition judges and community members alike.

Each member of the Academy will be allotted 4 free, 30-minute private lessons per season. These lessons may be in either Ballet, Jazz, or Tap technique. Dancers will receive one-on-one attention and an evaluation of skill and ability with one of our certified teachers.

Pre-Academy Ballet

We believe ballet is the foundation that a dancer requires to be successful in all other genres of dance. It is the core of a solid dance education. Our pre-academy dancers will learn both Cecchetti and Russian methods of ballet, and will work to build strength in their core, to better understand their bodies, and to master technique of the movement while still being allowed the freedom to express. We strive for a balance of discipline and fun. Students should expect to learn and memorize ballet terminology, participate in barre and center floor exercises, and to fall in love with the lovely classical style that is ballet.

Pre-Academy Tap
Unlike ballet (though we still use that core strength and solid arm placement that comes from ballet), tap focuses more intensely on timing, rhythm, and strength of sound. Our pre-academy students will learn to understand timing, and the way tap sounds combine with a song to make different rhythms. They will be expected to learn and memorize individual and combination steps across and center floor. Over time and throughout each level dancers will learn how to properly direct their energy into the floor while keeping eyes up, how to clarify and emphasize sounds, how to balance and coordinate, and how to become a master of rhythm!

**Pre-Academy Tap competes once a year.

Pre-Academy Jazz
Ready to take your ballet training to the next level and dance to some upbeat music? Jazz students will incorporate more conditioning, strength training, and stretching into their dance curriculum, and will learn the fundamentals of turning, kicking, jumping, and having a blast! Students have an opportunity to let loose and discover their personal style so that our instructors can encourage them to let it free in these high energy classes!

**Pre-Academy Jazz competes once a year.
